Hailing from the haunted lands of Dubrovnik, Croatia, Hudoba (the name translates as “evil” or “malice” from Croatian – in older Croatian dialects and traditional folklore, it refers to an evil spirit, demon, or a dark supernatural force) unleash the first glimpse into their debut offering, “Priče iz crnine” – to be released on August 1st, independently by the band. All mixing and mastering duties were handled by Vlaho Santini. The album cover art was hand drawn by the local artist Wanda Mitrović.
“Priče iz crnine” (“Tales from the Darkness”) contains stories inspired by the local folklore and historic events from Republic of Ragusa. All of the songs are presented in Croatian. The Republic of Ragusa was an aristocratic maritime republic centered on the city of Dubrovnik (Ragusa in Italian and Latin; Raguxa in Venetian) in South Dalmatia (today in southernmost Croatia) in Southern Europe. It carried that name from 1358 until 1808, reaching its commercial peak in the 15th and the 16th centuries. Its motto was “Non bene pro toto libertas venditur auro”, a Latin phrase which can be translated as “Liberty is not well sold for all the gold”. The Republic of Ragusa (modern-day Dubrovnik) is remembered for its wealth and diplomacy, but its history is also marked by a dark side. To survive the Black Death, the city pioneered draconian quarantines and subjected those who broke isolation to torture and gruesome executions. Furthermore, the city is haunted by the tragic 1667 Great Earthquake and the chilling 200-year-old curse of Lokrum Island… Combine the history of these dark times with top-notch black metal and you receive “Priče iz crnine” – a ferocious offering steeped in forgotten terror.
