German black metallers Legatus reveal their debut full-length offering, “Nachtwaerts”, out now via Schattenkult Produktionen.
With “Nachtwaerts”, the duo Legatus presents a dark, poetic monument that blurs the boundaries between atmospheric metal, pagan lore, and an existential withdrawal from the modern world. Behind the project stand the visionary Legatus (concept, lyrics, vocals) – who gave the project its name – and Die Legion, responsible for the musical arrangements and multi-layered compositions.
Musically, “Nachtwaerts” is defined by a majestic atmosphere driven heavily by keyboards, blending tragic melancholy with raw, natural power. Across seven chapters, Legatus takes the listener on a journey through mist-shrouded forests, ancient rites, and the deepest abysses of the human soul.
The lyrics weave a tapestry of nature mysticism, occult legends, and an unwavering longing for darkness. From the invocation of ancient powers at the “Schwarze Eiche” (Black Oak) and the sinister tale of the “Teufel auf dem Feldberg” (Devil on the Feldberg) to the swift, ethereal escape found in “Dort, wo Nebelgeister wandern” (Where Mist Spirits Wander) – each track is an atmospheric revelation. The interplay between harsh, icy moments and majestic, symphonic passages creates a gripping listening experience for fans of atmospheric black metal and dark folk.
