Askeregn is one of those bands that doesn’t particularly lend itself to modern influences in metal. Since their emergence into the underground world in 2011 with their demo “Undergangsglimt”, the band has fiercely opposed mediocrity and temporary trends, stating in a primal way their conception of the essence of black metal and all that it considers important in the scene .
Extremely emotional and charged with an intoxicating fiery
energy, the band’s second full-length album – ‘Brennende Åkres
Grøde’, delivers high-quality black metal in the form of a raging
tale of death, elements and devil suns.
Imbued with the idea of destruction, the title contains unique
melodies – raw and uncompromising, at times dissonant, at others
with more of a a punk taste, as the old tradition
dictates.
Rhythmic and moving, the music in “Brennende Åkres Grøde” is
rooted in the old-school feel of black metal. In each of the
pieces, you can taste the aggression and the malice,
as the pure emotion emanates from every corner – something
that can be felt more and more rarely in a black metal record
lately.
Beautiful solos, interesting drum beats and last but not least, the
madness of the vocals can be heard throughout all the seven
tracks in such a haunting mode, following the listener
continuously with their furious bite, on moments turning into a
grimace of despair and hopelessness.
It’s great to hear a band like Askeregn come back so sharply and so distinctly. Furthermore, along with its 41 minutes of outright lunacy and excellent production, the album also delivers excellent quality on the physical media itself – Sketches from the Void’s illustrations are superb and perfectly materialize the essence of the title and its connection to the dying world.
Chaotic and mesmerizing with its heavy dose of manic and purity, “Brennende Åkres Grøde” brings the best of Askeregn to date. All the most beautiful qualities of the band’s previous titles are combined into one whole, and the trio even manages to insert even more new ideas and lead us through the even darker and wilder territories of their black art, with an even more irresistible flame and relentless energy.
