Punishing classic Norwegian black metal following the old school
principles? Yes. Immediately, please.
Koldbrann’s seven inch vinyl “Den 6. Massedød (Manna fra en annen
himmel)” contains two pieces of furious and wild black metal,
mocking the blind following of established mediocre dogmas and
self-destructive nature of human kind. And if you haven’t heard the
name Koldbrann before, which is unlikely, then the music on this
record would appeal to all fans of Darkthrone, Craft, Dødheimsgard,
Taake, Urgehal, Leviathan, Tulus, Mysticum, Ildjarn, Gorgoroth,
1349, Endstille and others, precisely because of its specific
Norwegian dynamic charge and segements with hard rock
playfulness.
Smooth guitars lead us into “Den 6. Massedød (Manna fra en annen Himmel)”, replaced quickly by Mannevond’s vicious and exuberant vocals, followed by fast tremolo and hard rock riffs in the company of driving drums. The song maneuvers between the tempos, between the varying guitar melodies, sometimes merging them into one, the combination being pure Koldbrann whirlwind – just what fans of the band have come to expect over the past decade. Diverse, with memorable riffs and ferocious vocal appeals, the Sixth Mass Extermination arrives in full force.
Immediately after it comes the inhumane intervention “Inhumanitær Inngripen” with a completely punishing approach – a fast-paced song with emotionally charged vocals and striking cold guitar compositions, which within only four minutes manage to grab the ear completely and bring back the consciousness to the late 90s and the early 2000s, to the true rebellious spirit of black metal, ending the record with a hurricane of air-splitting screams, frenzied drums and raw atmosphere.
It’s refreshing to hear new music from Koldbrann, especially after such a long hiatus. I really hope the musicians prepare a new full-length album, but until then, this single will definitely be on regular rotation and keep the anticipation in check.
Absolutely fierce assault, “Den 6. Massedød (Manna fra en annen Himmel)” and its two tracks are a classic black metal display of nihilism, misanthropy and disgust for the lows of human nature, all in Koldbrann’s hate-soaked way. Get ready for a nine-minute storm of uncompromising 90’s black metal all-consuming energy, norwegian frost and curses. Nothing less.
