Sinoath & Malauriu : “Scuru / Symphony of the Scythe”

Two of Sicily’s most formidable black metal forces unite to unleash a sinister and unholy manifesto. “Scuru / Symphony of the Scythe”, the upcoming split release from the shadowy realms of Sinoath and Malauriu, is a dark covenant forged in fire and fury. This collaboration promises an immersive descent into raw, uncompromising soundscapes, brimming with malevolence and relentless energy. Together, these two iconic Italian entities weave an infernal tapestry of black metal that is both ferocious and haunting, pulling listeners into a vortex of unrelenting darkness.

Opening with ambient sounds reminiscent of rain-soaked, desolate landscapes, Malauriu’s single “Scuru” immediately conjures a realm of brooding melancholy. The track swiftly evolves into a cascade of doom-laden riffs, driven by a steady, almost hypnotic drum rhythm, enriched by lush synth layers that evoke an air of medieval mysticism. Expressive black metal vocals cut through the instrumentation like a blade, delivering an intensity that feels both raw and deliberate. Sinister curses echo above the symphony of ancient-tinged synths and intricate keyboard melodies, casting an ominous shadow over the composition. As the storm subsides, the darkness gives way to hauntingly immersive whispers, underscored by delicate percussion tremors, creating a moment of fragile beauty amid the turmoil.

Sinoath’s song “Symphony of the Scythe” draws inspiration from a profound vision of death and its inescapable presence in everyday life. Dedicated to the memory of the late Massimo Chiofalo, whose guitar work graced their 2015 EP “Meanders of Doom”, the track serves as both a tribute and a reflection on mortality.
Though steeped in darkness, the song masterfully balances sorrowful melancholy, unbridled raw energy, and an untamed rebellious spirit. It begins with an evocative keyboard prelude that sets a haunting tone, soon giving way to heavy, brooding doom riffs, interwoven with rapid-fire drumming and raw, emotive vocals—subdued in the mix yet brimming with expression. As the track progresses, it takes the listener through a dynamic journey: a fleeting burst of raw black metal instrumentation transitions seamlessly into a contemplative, doom-inspired passage.
Highlights include intricate Floyd Rose guitar solos, which add a fiery, technical flair, alongside atmospheric keyboard arrangements that lend the composition an almost cinematic depth. The classic old-school blackened doom vibe infuses the song with both nostalgia and timeless power, while the solemn, reverent finale leaves a lingering sense of reflection, perfectly encapsulating the theme of  inescapable embrace of death.

In “Scuru / Symphony of the Scythe,” Sinoath and Malauriu forge a union that transcends mere collaboration—it’s an invocation, a ritual of sound that digs deep into the abyss of human existence. This split release embodies the raw power of black metal in its purest form, yet with a reverence for the unspoken and the eternal. As the two forces of Sicily bring their unique visions to life, they weave together sorrow, fury, and reflection in ways that speak to both the heart and the soul. It’s a testament to the resilience of the genre, one that remains untamed and unyielding, ever evolving, and ever relevant. With this release, both bands invite us to stare into the void, not in fear, but with a sense of acceptance and unrelenting power, where the darkness becomes a forge that shapes strength and resilience.
