It was precisely encounters like thе оne I’ve experienced with Puritan Bone that first pushed me into writing about music in the late ’90s.  “Ecstasy on the Frontier of Blood” is the debut album of the Dutch black metal duo, standing as one of the year’s most delightful surprises, at least to me.

We’re talking about a  true underground black metal gem, unearthed from the depths of the local scene alongside acts like Imperial Cult, Turia, and more – a  record that captivates the listener with the raw, unpolished beauty radiating from its core, seemingly transforming inside of you. The album can surely be experienced as one whole atmospheric journey, imbued with a beautiful ritualistic and folkloristic touch. It is precisely one of those works that, once played, carries you into a dark parallel universe. Comprising six pieces with varying lengths, each track is intensely raw and ferocious, yet also melancholic, cold  and strangely soothing to the senses.

Beyond its hauntingly beautiful atmospheric passages and raw, malevolent vocals, the album unfolds a wealth of enthralling elements. On “Corporeal Drift”, for example, hypnotic guitar effects ripple like spectral synthesizers, layered with bass, distant ghostly choirs, and a mesmerizing fusion of lo-fi grit and crystalline clarity. The band holds yet another ace – two vocalists, whose voices unleash upon every track. T.’s performance, often subtly veiled in the mix, exudes a primal, almost arcane malice, carrying a dark energy that seems to pulse from some otherworldly source.

Ultimately, “Ecstasy on the Frontier of Blood” emerges as a hypnotic, arcane ritual – a work to be experienced at midnight, when you’re just rising  from your velvet coffin, listening to the melodies in honor to the grandeur of your own awakening. The expression throughout the album is utterly authentic and each note is wrought with precision, forging a cryptic alchemy of raw essence and elegance, like in a mesmerizing rite.
