The Estonian black metal band Kõdu has unleashed a new single from their upcoming full-length title, “Kirjad Sõgedate Külast”, to be released on April 20th via  Antiq Records. As a concept album rooted in Estonian mysticism and folklore, the new material reinterprets classic second wave black metal through the lens of synth-driven atmospheres and orchestral-epic influences.

Kõdu’s second full-lenght, “Kirjad Sõgedate Külast”, is a concept album that unfolds as a collection of letters from a forgotten village on the brink of collapse. Through tales of drought, famine, a decaying royal bloodline sustained by inbreeding, and a murder mystery set at the turn of a century, the record paints a bleak portrait of isolation, superstition, and moral rot. Each song functions as a written testimony, revealing fragments of the village’s fate from different perspectives.

Remaining true to Kõdu’s ethos, all lyrics are performed in Estonian and are drawn from the works of Estonian poets active between 1850 and 1950, grounding the album deeply in local language and literary tradition. The visual identity is drawn from a 1913 artwork by Estonian artist Nikolai Triik. “Kirjad Sõgedate Külast” stands as a unified narrative work, rooted in black metal tradition, yet driven by storytelling and cultural memory.

“Kirjad Sõgedate Külast” might be translated as “”Letters from the Village of the Witches”. Under the same name exists a work by Juhan Smuul, the first edition of which was published in 1955. It consists of eight parts/letters. Later, in 1966, a film titled “Kirjad Sõgedate Külast” was unveiled, following the action of two letters –  “Ahasute” and “Pühadekari hukumine”.

Influenced by these works, Kõdu promise to unleash a work steeped in the surreal, infused with twisting narratives, haunting atmospheres, and the raw intensity of black metal.
