Eucharist is one of the legendary Swedish death/black metal bands, crafting their dark art since the late 80’s. When I heard their new single last year and later wrote the article for the upcoming title „I Am the Void“, everything inside me bursted into flames – the magic of Eucharist is all-consuming and will always bring me a specific atmosphere and feeling that could not. to be forged in any other way. The very news of their return after more than 20 years of silence was spectacular!
Both of the band’s full-lenght albums until this moment – „A
Velvet Creation“ (1993) and „Mirrorworlds“ (1997) provide my
favorite type of metal – obsessive, sublime, raw, melodic and at
the same time woven through fine design and technical precision, as
the band has always liked to combine different elements of death
metal in their work , which always leads to very deep
soundscapes.
As a matter of fact, „A Velvet Creation“ is one of the examples of
classics in the death metal genre and although the band currently
carries black metal at its core, this album is a classic melodic
death metal that sets the tone for many artists in future and
presents music that has not been heard in such a light so far, like
some of our other favorite black metal bands – Darkthrone, for
example.
„Mirrorworlds“ also stands as a glorious monument in their
discography and presents a new extremely beautiful form of melodic
death metal with magnificent riffs that I can listen to alone all
day long, along with compositions that send us into space, among
blood-soaked stars and rising suns.
That is why all the expectations I have for Eucharist are for no
less than the best of the best… of the best.
Apart from being long-awaited, the band’s third long-playing
album is more deeply connected to my specific personal beliefs and
mental states, which makes it come just in time, albeit after a
really long break.
As for the music of Eucharist – as we have already understood, it
is not music for everyone, it is not music for the lovers of
„modernity“, of „likes“ and for those who adore being in the
spotlight with nothing valuable to express.
This is music for true connoisseurs and in this case – the true
cult of black and death metal in its purest form. A cult that
cannot be flawed and that must be approached with all the attention
you could imagine.
Among the old songs of Eucharist there have always been glorious
old school melodic riffs and a primitive emotion woven into the
vocals which grab you by the throat right at the first glimpse. The
band has always intertwined ethereal ideas in its concepts and
philosophically presented the unimaginable to its listeners in a
majestic and breathtaking way.
Before you start with „I am the Void“, I really recommend you go
through the whole discography of the band, if you haven’t heard
anything of theirs so far, just to be able to feel the evolution
and the power of this return.
„I am the Void“ is not just a third long-playing album, but also
a monument to a new beginning for Markus Johnsson, the ideologue
behind the band, who in his own words has always wanted to move to
a darker atmosphere. The musician finds support in this endeavor in
the new addition to Eucharist – drummer Simon „Bloodhammer“
Schilling, also a member of Panzerchrist, At The Grave and
Marduk.
Together, the duo set the stage for a new era for Eucharist and set
out to explore a new, much darker side of the band, rooted in 90’s
black metal and filled with incredible musical surprises.
Starting the adventure with dark drones and an ambient atmosphere, Eucharist strikes with fierce blasts, raw cutting guitars and harsh black metal vocals that we could not have imagined hearing from this direction. Listening to the first song, I think that the idea of Markus Johnsson to indulge in his own darkness and start creating in the direction of black metal, is a great gift for all fans of our favorite genre.
The experience and the primacy amaze in the first seconds, and
in each of the songs you can feel an incredible emotion, firmly
rooted in the roots of beautiful cold atmospheres.
Although Eucharist’s incredible death metal tricks from previous
albums can still be felt at their very best, here the heart is 90’s
high-end black metal, erupting to the heights with its sharpness,
precision and relentless vortex of unearthly expression.
Not to mention the atmospheric guitar solos in songs like „In the
Blaze of the Blood Red Moon“, which take me back to the Eucharist
debut records, which I have always dreamed of hearing through the
prism of black metal.
With twelve songs and over an hour of
overflowing atmospheres with cutting instrumentals and enormous vocals, the band conquers
the chaos with inherent grandeur.
With „I Am the Void“ Eucharist embraces more than 30 years of
experience in the death metal scene, allowing us to witness a
beautiful and all-consuming metamorphosis into a darker and more
captivating being. The inhuman guitar riffs , which are painfully
familiar to all fans of the band, are here again, but this time
accompanied by a darker ritualistic atmosphere, more heaviness,
making the record a feverish adventure through unfamiliar outer
space, nightmares and celestial creatures, lurking in the dark.
„I Am the Void“ is a captivating story about the essence of
darkness, its power and its divine nature, which not everyone can
perceive and endure.
Do you have the courage to wander through the Abyss and open
your souls to Darkness and its majesty?
If the answer is „Yes“, listen to „I am the Void“ and dwell into
the darkest corners of the vortex!
